In the news today, are calls from the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) for a new approach to children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).  They argue that with proper training and lessons for parents and teachers on coping with the unruly behaviour that goes along with ADHD would be more effective in the long run than drug treatments such as Ritalin.  They also called for a ban on prescribing Ritalin to children under 5.
There are around 365,000 children in the UK with the disorder and most of them are not receiving treatment of any kind.  This means that almost every primary school class in Britain is likely to have a pupil with ADHD enrolled in it. Statistics show, however, that of the children who are receiving treatment are generally given stimulants such as Ritalin.  There are 37,000 children in the UK on such stimulants at present.

The symptoms of ADHD are:
•    Distracted easily
•    Restless behaviour
•    Extreme difficulties sitting still
•    Difficulty concentrating and learning
•    Difficulty taking turns in class or groups
•    Inability to follow instructions
•    Inability to play quietly
•    Butterfly activity - flitting from 1 activity to another without finishing any of them
•    Frequently interrupting
Socially, children with ADHD will find it hard to maintain friendships and are often bullied as a result of their behaviour in school.
As you can imagine, it is exhausting for parents to try to manage their children’s behaviour. It is easy therefore to see why so many Doctors turn to Ritalin to ease the pressure on parents and offer a ‘fix’ for the problem.
NICE want to see programmes to teach parents how to develop and maintain a structured environment at home as the first line of attack against to combat the disorder.  A structured home environment promotes concentration and, they argue, will help parents manage potentially disruptive behaviour better.
Ritalin and other stimulants should be reserved for children over 5 who have been diagnosed with severe ADHD only and should only be prescribed as part of a holistic programme of treatment including behavioural therapy and psychological treatment.
