Becoming a parent is a wonderful and exciting time for many new mums. However for up to 80% of new mums the ‘baby blues’ can set in about 3 or 4 days after the birth of their baby.
Baby Blues can manifest itself jn a variety of ways, from mild depression and anxiety about small things that wouldn’t ordinarily bother you, to weepy spells that seem to start for no particular reason.
For the most part Baby Blues can be attributed to hormonal changes, soreness and discomfort from the physical act of giving birth and in some cases a sense of anticlimax after the big event. All of these causes are transitory and shouldn’t last long. THis means that the Baby Blues don’t last long either. Perhaps a day or two.
The Parent Gossip Tips for beating the Baby Blues:
- If you feel like crying - cry.
- Try to get some sleep. Your body has been through an exhausting and dramatic experience. It needs rest and so does your mind.
- As a family member to mind the baby - yes you can do this! - while you have a rest or a warm bath.
- Look after yourself. In the long run if you look after yourself then you will be able to look after baby much better.
- Talk to a friend. Your mother in law is probably not the best option in this scenario. I would recommend a close friend whom you trust and can open up to about your feelings. Just getting how you feel off your chest will help immensely.
For around 10% of new mums the baby blues can develop into something deeper; Post Natal Depression. Feelings of hopelessness and anger are not uncommon and this is often in tandem with complete exhaustion.
The most important thing to do if this happens to you as a new mum, or if you think your partner or a family member is going through this, is to get help! Contact your GP or Health Visitor and talk about how you are feeling. If you think that Post Natal Depression is affecting someone you know, talk to them about it and give them the same advice. You may even wish to contact their GP or Health Visitor for them. Professional help and support is available and admitting to yourself that you may have post natal depression is the first step on the road to recovery.
