6 top safety tips for bathing your baby
Bathing your baby gives you a wonderful opportunity to connect with her. It’s a great chance to bond with her but it can be a bit of a scary prospect when you first come home from hospital and are faced with bathing her alone. So here are 6 brilliant tips to make bath time a safe and fun time for both you and your baby.
- This may seem like a no brainer but you should never, ever leave a baby unattended in a bath. Regardless of whether you are using a special baby bath, a bath seat, or a support. Gather everything you are going to need togethr before hand and if the doorbell rings or your mobile goes off in the next room, either ignore it or wrap baby in a warm towel and take her with you to answer it.
- Get the temperature right. Always put the cold water in first before you put any hot in. The best way to test the water temperature is with your elbow or by dropping a little water onto the inside of your arm. There are also special thermometers available that are designed to test bath water.Make sure the bath has finished running before you put baby in.
- For older infants make sure that the bath is safe by placing a rubber bath mat in it to prevent slips. Remember that this doesn’t substitute constant supervision.
- Keep the water shallow. Babies up to about 6 months old should be bathed in about 4 inches of water. Bath seats are a good idea for babies who can sit up, as they give you an extra hand. Again, this is not a substitute for constant supervision.
- Make sure your bathroom is nice and warm. Babies needto be kept warm, especially new borns. Special hooded baby towels are a great idea. Have a warm towel ready to pat your little one dry and wrap them up in. This will minimise the amount of body heat they lose when you take them out of the bath.
- Don’t use too muchj soap or shampoo, and only use specialist shampoo designed for infants. Strong soaps and adult products will be too harsh on their delicate skin.
