Nine complaints have been received from parents by the BBC about the CBBC presenter Cerrie Burnell who was born with only one hand. Parents will not let their children watch her on television because they feel intimidated by the awkward questions that may arise. Some parents have even suggested that the sight of Cerries hand will cause sleep problems for their children.
The question should be asked whether the problem related to this is truly the child’s or the parents. The world is an amazing place full of different types of people from many different diverse cultures and countries and disability is a part of this. Discussing issues and problems with your children should be a daily routine; all children are frightened by lots of different things.
In answer to the question of where the problem lies, I would suggest the parents.
