It’s a fantastic and momentous occasion. This is your baby’s first adventure into the world outside the hospital.  So of course you will want to make it as safe as possible for your baby A car seat that is appropriate for your baby and is correctly fitted is arguably the most important factor in keeping your baby safe on his or her first trip, and every subsequent trip after that too!
In no circumstances is it EVER safe to hold your baby in your arms in a moving vehicle. If the driver has to brake sharply there is next to no chance that you would be able to keep a safe grasp on him or her. The consequences would be dreadful.
If possible, buy your new car seat well in advance of your baby’s birth.  That way you have plenty of time to choose the right seat for your car and won’t be rushed into a bad decision. There are basically 2 types of car seat for babies.  You can choose an baby specific seat that can only be used to carry babies and must be replaced by the time your baby gets to a certain weight (usually about 20 lbs), or go for  a convertible seat that is adapted to suit both babies and older infants.
A baby specific seat is a good investment as these rear facing seats are designed specifically with babies in mind and will fit your baby better. You should get at least a year out of a baby specific seat as babies under the age of 1 year must be in a rear facing seat for the first year of their life or weigh 20 lbs or more.  An even better investment is a combination travel system that includes a baby specific seat and a stroller/buggy frame into which the seat clips securely.  This is great for making the transition from buggy to car as smooth as possible especially for sleepy infants.
Convertible seats can be changed from rear pacing to forward facing as your baby grows but to be honest, by the time your little treasure is 1 year old and weighs 20lbs that seat will have seen a fair amount of action/drool/sick/stickiness.  You might be looking to get a new one at that point anyway!  They are expensive but an initial investment now could give you years of safe motoring if you choose a convertible seat.
Don’t place a rear facing convertible seat or baby specific seat into the front seat of your car.  The passenger airbags that the majority of cars now have are extremely dangerous and statistics show that in an accident it is most likely to be the front passenger side of the car that takes most damage.
If it’s cold when you leave hospital you should strap baby into the seat first and then put blankets on to make them snugly and comfortable.  This will ensure that in the event of an accident the safety straps actually do their job and there is no risk of your baby coming out of the seat.
Finally, and most importantly of all, make sure that your baby seat is fitted correctly. Don’t rely on how you think it ought to look or simplistic illustrated instructions. Good retailers such as Mothercare offer fitting services to show you how to fit the seat correctly and will ensure it is fitted safely for you.
