Your bump is getting bumpier and you’re starting to think more about what the little person inside you will be like. Understandably, you are being drawn more and more to the mother and baby shops in your local high street and are surfing the net more for
things than for anything else.
Buying baby clothes is exciting but can be a bit of a minefield. The choices available online, and in high street shops and boutiques are overwhelming! It’s tempting to buy just about everything, but be careful not to buy too much. You might end up with a nursery full of beautiful outfits that your baby may wear just once, if at all, as they grow so fast. This is fine if you are Katie Holmes but isn’t practical, or financially sensible, for the rest of us.
So here are the Parent Gossip top tips for buying baby clothes.
- Consider the size you think your baby might be. Were you and your partner both big babies? It would be a crying shame to buy baby clothes that would fit a new born up to around 7lbs, only to find that baby is nearer the 10lb mark at birth! Likewise, you don’t want to find yourself with a wardrobe full of beautiful baby clothes for a big bonny baby and then bring home a tiny baby with nothing to wear until they grow into things
- Don’t be tempted to buy too much all at once. Make sure you have enough little outfits, in a couple of sizes, to get through the first 2 weeks or so. But not so many that your baby grows out of them before having chance to wear them.
- If you know the sex of your baby beofer the birth, you can shop accordingly. However, if you are opting for the element of surprise, choose neutral colours that will suit eitehr a boy or girl. White and cream are the obvious choices, but greens, reds, purples and yellows can look fabulous according to the time of year.
- Exchange duplicate outfits that you buy twice (believe us, it does happen) or that relatives and friends give you, for larger outfits for later on. Keep all your receipts!
- Comfortable baby-grows and sleep suits are a must, along with body suits with both long and short sleeves. Lots of T shirts and mini tracksuit trousers will get you through the early weeks.
- Think carefully about the time of year your baby is due. A winter baby will need more in the way of vests and warm outer clothing, while a summer baby will need cooler fabrics and good sun protection. That sweet little summer frock that you picked up cheap in the sales might fit baby in December but she’ll never get to wear it in July.
Shopping for baby clothes is wonderful fun both before and after your baby is born. It’s even more fun than shopping for yourself!
