Some children are naturally sporty. Others are naturally talented musicians or dancers or artists. It has long been a concern of mine that Witchling 12 has not shown any hint of such a talent. We encouraged her to take up a sport, swimming, martial arts, cross country running, you name it. But nothing seemed to float her boat.
Then there was music. We bought her a guitar which she promptly sat in the corner because she couldn’t instantly play it. Her keyboard has met a similar fate since its arrival at Christmas.
Ballet and modern dance classes proved to be a bit much as she doesn’t have the grace or co-ordination to be a dancer.
Imagine my trepidation therefore, when Witchling 12 came home from school with instructions and a list of ingredients for her first food technology (home economics to those of us over 25) project at school. eek! The recipe was for apricot flapjacks. I had visions of the burnt and crumbly I was sure would come home to be tasted by all and then surrupticiously binned in the dead of night. But it was golden brown and just gooey enough! It tasted fabulous!
The next project was fairy cakes. Made under supervision in a school kitchen, they came back spongey and a bit rubbery. She was still pleased as punch with them. She was so excited by them that I allowed her freedom in the kitchen to have another crack at them. The results? Perfect! I couldn’t have made better myself!
Now my 12 year old daughter is making cottage pie with a bubble and squeak topping, tomato and chilli soup and fairy cakes until they come out of her ears!
She may not be captain of the netball team, or first flute in the school band, but my goodness that girl can cook! Look out Nigella, Witchling 12 is on your heels!
