1 in 10 children in the UK are living in poverty, growing up in overcrowded, cramped housing, or in ‘temporary accomodation’ that sees them shunted from place to place with little stability or hope for a future. What is worse, 3.8 million children are living in poverty in the UK even after their housing costs are met! Thankfully, the government has now banned the use of bed and breakfasts as a long term solution for families with children.  This ban came into effect in 2004 to coincide with their publication of the Every Child Matters strategy.  All of this is part of the Government’s pledge to end child poverty by 2020.
The strategy aims to ensure that every child has the support and means to:
•    be safe
•    stay healthy
•    be a positive contributor to society
•    enjoy life and achieve
•    foundations for economic well-being.
UK Housing charity, Shelter argues that affordable, decent quality housing is key to improving the lives of children and young people in the UK and bringing down the shocking child poverty statistics.
Many children are being made sick by the conditions that they are living.  Unsurprisingly, these children struggle to achieve at school and rarely receive the education that they deserve, whether this is due to non attendance or constant moving around.
Children living in poverty are insecure and have dreadfully damaged self esteem. Tragically this, coupled with poor educational achievement and degraded health means that a child growing up in poverty has little chance of meeting their full potential as an adult.
Imagine being a parent in this situation. Poverty brings parents to breaking point. They, and their children are prone to chronic anxiety, and depression. It’s hardly surprising that parents living in poverty are left struggling with children who have profound and behavioural problems such as aggression, ADHD and bed wetting.
