The results of Microsoft’s annual parentsz survey this year have shown that many parents would like more information and tools to help the m to manage the gaming that their children do and to help them to create a safer online environment for children. Most parents across both Europe and America see video and computer games in a positive light. 61% of parents surveyed claimed that the games provide good social experience and just over half feel that computer games atually bring their families together, rather than being antisocial.
This shift in atitude comes, I feel from the mainstream acceptance of the games console into the everyday life of most family homes. The Xbox and the Playstation and the Wii especially are no longer the province of teenage boys and the vacant eyed zombies that they used to call to mind. These hardcore gamers still exist of course, but so do a new breed of gamers. The new breed are parents and grandparents and young children who want to play games that are more stimulating than blasting super mutants in post-apocalyptic bunkers. Games such as Wii Fit and the iminent Wii Cheer are great for getting kids and grannies and parents all involved and active as well as feeding the 21st centry craving for technology.
My only concern with all of this is the amount of time my children, and my partner for that matter, spend in these alternative realities. And I am not alone. Only half of the surveyed parents last year felt that they were actually in control of the amount of time spent by their children playing computer games. Microsoft has responded with a Family Guide brochure that aims to provide parents with a tool to manage the amount of time children spend on games.
