Is Santa Claus real?
The Witchlings have spent 6 Christmases with me now and have until this year, maintained a stalwart faith in the big red man. It is almost worrying in some ways that Witchling 12 should still believe in Old Saint Nick.
When The Witchlings first came to me and we began to create Christmas rituals as a family we had to change a few of the more traditional ones to suit their specific needs. The notion of a man, even a big fat jolly man with a beard and a bag of goodies, entering the house and coming into their room was too much for such nervous little witchlings. At that point they were still insisting that I check each window every night to ensure that their birth father could not get at them. So we created a magic key. The key was a huge old fashioned gold key on a piece of red velvet ribbon. I posted it, with their letters to Santa, off to the North Pole so that Santa could get in through the front door on Christmas eve. I also promised to wait up and take delivery of the presents so that he didn’t have to go in their room.
The key was duly left on the empty plate where Rudolph’s carrot had been and the crumbs from the mince pie remained. What more proof could they wish for!? He also left footprints outlined in glitter all through the hall. It took MONTHS to hoover it all up but it was worth it to see their faces!
This year I have been taking requests for Santa to gift wrap the presents ‘if you have time mum’ and Santa is being left a shot of Malibu and Diet Coke and a Slimming World Cereal Bar!
Witchling 10 still desperately wants to believe in Santa but none of her friends do, so just how much longer can she hold on to her faith in the big red man?
My advice to parents of pre-teens is to say this….. It doesn’t matter if YOU believe is Santa Claus, as long as Santa Claus believes in YOU.
