Now that the children are getting bigger and are developing definite and distinct differences in taste and personality, it’s become increasingly evident that they need their own rooms URGENTLY! This means some major upstairs rethinking. The plan is to convert our very large bathroom into a single bedroom for our oldest daughter then convert our tiny box room into a bathroom.
A grand plan to be sure, and an excellent opportunity for me to shop! So, I’m on a shopping mission for bathroom furniture. As I said, it is a tiny room, so the bathroom furniture we select will have to be very carefully thought out. We need storage for enough toiletries to sink a small battle ship and a bath large enough for a stressed out mum to soak her troubles away in. Oh, and a funky stylish sink to suit a young funky dad.
Selecting bathroom furniture with a family in mind means that you have to be extremely practical as well as considering the way it will look in your home. Here a few things that you should consider as a parent selecting bathroom furniture.
- Is there a cupboard high enough up that little people cannot reach it? This should be used to store medicines and should be lockable.
- How many towels do your brood use in a day? A vertical heated towel rail in place of a radiator will save space and allow you to keep towels dry in greater numbers.
- If you are fitting a shower over a bath make sure that you can get in to the bath. A glass shower screen may look beautiful but it will make washing your 6 year old’s hair a complete nightmare.
- Consider the bottom of your bath. Is is textured or smooth. If it’s smooth then stick on anti slip pictures are a great solution.
- When you choose taps, I would recommend a large mixer tap with a temperature setting dial or thermostat. That way the temperature can be set and fixed at a low enough point so that if your little people turn on the tap they will not be scalded by hot water.
- When you choose your bath, measure the sides of it. How high off the ground will the bath be. A large step down could prove tricky for an older child and a slip could be fatal.
