When I was about 14 I was a bit of a rebel. It’s hard to believe now (not) that I strayed from the path of conformity but I was, as they say, a bad girl.

  • I stayed out at least an hour after my parents told me to be in.
  • If I could possibly be any more lazy then I would have won a prize.
  • My bedroom floor could not be seen.
  • I discovered boys and was generally covered in ‘lovebites’ and would come back from dates looking a bit too dishevelled for my own good.

How my parents survived my teenage years I will never know.  They had, and still have, the patience of saints.

To top all of this off, I also had rebellious hair.  When I was 14 I went, unaccompanied, to our local hairdresser and asked very specifically for the haircut of my adolescent dreams. I already had short hair, cut in a pixie style crop. But I had a bit of a re-style in mind.

The hairdresser acquiesced to my request and spiked up the top of my hair, then set to work on shaving a grid of diamonds into the back of my head. It was magnificent! I looked a little as though I had been on a barbecue to be honest, but I thought my radical clipper sculpture was fabulous.

Now all of this may not seem very radical nowadays since I have often seen children as young as 4 with funky designs shaved into the sides of their cropped heads. But we are talking about 20 years ago here! People simply did not do these things, let alone 14 year old school girls.

Unsurprisingly, I was suspended from school until my hair grew back to a length where it wouldn’t show any more. But I have never regretted getting that hair cut and have had far more radical styles since. Ask anyone who knows me!

I wonder what I have in store for me when the Witchlings start to express themselves with their hair.  Will it be dreads? a mohawk? perhaps a skinhead? The best thing is that whatever they do it won’t shock me, because I will have already done it myself!
