The Witchlings want to have a Halloween party.  Well they ARE Witchlings after all! It is not even the 1st of October yet but the plans are already afoot for the big night!  And do you know something? I am very nearly as excited as they are!  So here are my top tips for throwing a fright fest to end all all fright fests for your own little monsters!

Theme - This one depends on the age of your guests and how well you know them. We have just moved into the area so we won’t be holding a full on scream-a-thon just in case some of the Witchlings’ friends are a little sensitive.

There are lots of themes to choose from though. You could go for a mad scientist’s lab or you could select a witches’ coven or a vampire castle.  A monster lair is also a great fun one.  You could even turn your house into Hogwarts if you are so inclined and invite witches and wizards to enrol for the evening.

Games and Activities – The costume competition and traditional games such as apple bobbing are great fun.  Make a scary pass the parcel with vampire teeth and plastic spiders between each layer of paper for a spooky twist. Musical Zombie statues is always fun too.  Each contestant dances like a zombie until the music stops then freezes in their scariest pose. And if it all gets a bit too much, play corpses (a twist on the old favourite ‘Sleeping Lions’) where each corpse lies down and keeps as still as possible while the grave digger tries to make them laugh or move without touching them.

For great party game prizes dip into the spooky party bag fillers and distribute fake spiders, fangs and pretend wounds among the guests but remember to give each guest a party bag of goodies to take home with them.

Decorations
- Steer clear of candles and other naked flames for obvious reasons.  Dim lighting and liberally draped fake cobwebs should set the mood nicely.  Your guests’ imaginations will do the rest.
Menu – Scary face pizzas and zombie fingers (Sausages) are good Halloween fodder along with witches’ brew (Lemonade with blue food colouring in) and brain sandwiches (egg mayo).  The rest of the menu will probably consist of sweet treats in lieu of ‘trick or treating’. I know I don’t really want my own Witchlings cavorting around and knocking on strangers’ doors after dark, would you? For those with healthy consciences bobbing for apples is a great, fun way to get a healthy snack into the sugar fuelled revellers.
So there you have it! The fool proof guide to a great fright night! Stock up on sweets and party bag fillers and plenty of witches brew for a Halloween to remember!

All I need to do now is find a costume!
