The bank holiday weekend is fast approaching and we are hoping for some great weather. In fact we are praying for some sunshine as the O’Griffiths are going camping!
It began as a bit of a whim really. Why not get outdoors and enjoy some fresh air and have a cheap break away with the Witchlings? More and more people are choosing to holiday at home this year, as the credit crunch bites harder.
I have camped since I was a tiny child so I am no stranger to the great outdoors and I love camping (even in the rain). I have very fond memories of Guide camps every spring and summer. We giggled our way through nights in drafty old canvas tents in sleeping bags that slithered around all over the plastic groundsheets that were all that separated us from the earwigs and worms. We would get up every morning, bleary eyed, and cook on open fires and build wash stands and other contraptions out of wooden broom handles, sticks and string.
Nowadays of course there is such a vast array of outdoor equipment available to those of us who want to stray off the beaten path, that broom handles and string are not required on my kit list. My children are pampered campers. We have blow up beds and lamps and thick squashy sleeping bags with built in pillows. There are electric heaters, lights and funky furniture sets. I would say everything except the kitchen sink, but I know we’ll be taking that too! I have, however, drawn the line at them taking their portable DVD palyers!
