Last night was parents evening at Witchling 12’s school. It’s her first year at secondary school and I was aprehensive about whatI would hear. Has she settled? Is she performing as well as she could? Are there any problems? What extra help can we give her?

Turns out that I shouldn’t have worried at all!

In Maths my little Witchling has improved by .8 of a National Curriculum level in just 2 terms. On average a child will improve by about 2 thirds of a level over the course of a whole year! Maths is not her strong suit by any stretch but she seems to be really getting the hang of things. She is receiving plenty of extra help and attends a special session at 8am every Monday before school called Fit For Figures to improve her numeracy further.

In Drama, Witchling 12 seems to have really found her niche. She is confident and keen and seems to have a bit of a talent! I studied drama at university so I have always been careful not to put my daughters on the stage. Pushy parents make my skin crawl. But in spite of that, her teacher is already recommending that Witchling 12 would do well to consider studying Drama at GCSE level.  Proud? I nearly burst!

I met Witchling 12’s Music teacher next and discovered that she is a hard working, likeable student, who works best on solo projects but is gradually growing in confidence when working in groups. She is exactly on target to get her level 4 by the end of the school year.

Her German teacher was amazed at the progress she has made, having started the language a half a term behind her other classmates.  She has caught up and is working at the same level now. Her confidence has improved vastly and she is a pleasure to teach.

Last on the evening’s list was her Technology teacher. Witchling 12 has performed very well in this subject, obtaining a 3.7 for her Graphics module and a 3.3 for her Food Technology module. The only thing dragging her grades down from the level 4 she is targeted for is her homework. More care and attention needed there! Her teacher recommended that she opt for Textiles, Food Technology and Graphics for Year 8.

Thursday will see us returning to the high school to meet her English, History, Geography, Religious Studies, Art, and ICT teachers. I am looking forward to it already.
