A recent study by a team at Colombia University has researched by some children underperform. They looked at the impact wealth had on a child and found a wide gap in ability between poor and rich families in the US. Children from very low income backgrounds scored only half of what children from higher incomes did in literacy tests.

What most surprised the team, however, was the impact that parenting and home environment affected children’s intelligence levels. They noticed that lower income families generally had a poorer home learning environment for their children, and that this is perhaps what made all the difference. Other factors such as parental sensitivities and responsiveness to children’s needs, which may be related to parents’ intelligence, had a large effect on the children’s well being.

So it’s now proven that you need to pay close attention to your children’s needs and feelings and encourage them to learn at home; this will have massive knock-on effects on how well they learn at school. Mothers need to interact positively with their children from a very young age – as young as 9 months.

It’s been suggested that compensatory education programmes could help bring children from poorer backgrounds up to level with other children.
