Why won’t she wash?! If your daughter is anything like mine it takes a team of wild horses to drag her into the shower and then once she is in there she won’t come out! Oh, and within 10 minutes of her shower she has a distinctly manky smell to her all over again and her hair seems to need washing. Somehow her body s maturing faster than she is. I am hoping she will catch up soon. It’s a sensitive subject and I am conscious that she has ragile self esteem so I don’t want to bully her into good hygiene habits but ther are a number of things that I can do to help her. Here are my tips for encouraging good pre-teen hygiene.

1. Come Clean. A shower every day is an essential part of a good hygiene routine. This has to involve actually WASHING with SOAP, not just singing Miley Cyrus at the top of your voice for 20 minutes. Your pre-teen should have her own body wash or shower gel and her own towel. We have a colour code system so that there are no mix ups and I know who hasn’t put their towel back.

2. Teeth. Bad breath and the thought of losing adult teeth permanently to cavities and decay should be enough to convince your pre-teen to get their pearly whites pearly white again.  You can reward a good dental routine with a funky electronic toothbrush.

3. Gotta Hand It To Them. The spread of viruses such as the common cold or more topically Swine Flu is no joking matter and you should talk seriously with your pre-teen about the risks of not washing their hands before eating food and after using the toilet. Washing hands after sneezing and after fussing your pets are also equally important to prevent spreading germs and paracites.

4. Don’t Sweat It. Puberty means sweat. Body odour is one of the least pleasant effects of puberty and can be a cause of horribly teasing and terrible complexes for many pre-teens. Make sure your child understands that deoderant will only work on clean skin and won’t really mask body odor that is already there. Washing regularly, especially after sports, is the most important thing here.

5. Hair Raising Stuff. Along with sweaty armpits and oily skin comes greasy hair. It’s just not fair! Encourage washing thoroughly every day with a good oil control shampoo. If your pre-teen gets into the habit of grooming their hair well and keeping it back from their face then you will find that they may have fewer spots on their forehead. Gel and hairspray should be at least rinsed out every evening to help with this too.
