6. Beauty Really Is Skin Deep. As puberty continues, skin gets oilier and oilier. This is especially true of the ‘T’ zone (the forehead and nose). A mild cleanser should be used by pre-teens twice a day.  If and when spots and blackheads appear then your pre-teen should be encouraged to keep their hands away from them because it really is true - it won’t go away if you pick it! Germs carried on manky pre-teen fingers will make the spot worse and will cause inflammaion and potentially scarring. With sumer on the way it is also important to make sure that sunscreen is used to prevent premaskin cancer.

7. A Close Shave? The pre-teen and early teen years are when many girls want to start to shave their under arms and their legs. Your daughter will need a teen freindly razor to use along with their own shaving foam. Shaving difficult bits such as ankles and the backs of knees is tricky so offer tips. Underarms are especially difficult. Talk about how to look after a razor, how to rinse and change blades. Your daughter may be nervous about using a razor but don’t be tempted to allow her to use hair removal cream. The chemicals in them are too harsh for sensitive skin. For eyebrow plucking, advise her to do it after a warm shower so that it is easier. If she wants to pluck her eyebrows, advise her to do so after showering, when hairs are plump and prime for plucking.

8. Nail those nasty nails. Your daughter should be trimming her nails on a weekly basis, cutting straight across rather than at angles. If she is a nail biter encourage her to stop by talking about the infections she is risking when she brings her nails to her mouth. Beauty treats such as visiting a nail bar are nice for an occaisional treat but acrylic extensions and false nails are likely to damage the nail bed and are probably a bad idea fr a pre-teen. Painting your nails together is a great bonding excersise though.

9. Other Girly Bits. Sharing make up and hair brushes and combs is a no-no. Make sure you pre-teen knows about the risk of infections caused by germs. Your daughter’s menstrual cycle might be a cause for embarassment for you both at first but it is important that she feels comfortable talking to you about her cycle. You can then teach her about the different products that she can choose the right one for her.
