Ready For School?

If you have a little person who is starting school in September you will understand what a dilemma mums and dads face knowing how much your little person should know or be able to do before the big day.
Some children are already starting to read and write letters and numbers and can count to 20 and repeat the alphabet. Many others are not quite ready for that yet. This is really nothing at all to worry about. Trust me. Some children will have only just turned 4 on the big day, whereas others will have their 5th birthday on the horizon already. The little person’s class will have children in it who are at massively different development stages.
However, there are a few things you can do to help your little person be ready for their scholastic debut. Get these practical skills in place early enough and your little scholar will benefit academically simply because they will be able to settle quickly into the school routine and relax enough to soak up academic knowledge.
• Can she recognise her name? Her coat peg, tray and every item of clothing (even shoes) will need to be marked with it.
• Can he open his own lunchbox and the little parcels and bags and pots and pouches therein? Send easy peel fruit such as Bananas and squeezy tubes of yoghurt unless you want to sacrifice all your teaspoons to the schoolbag fairy.
• If school dinners are the way to go then he will need to be able to choose his lunch and sort out his own cutlery, drink etc.
• Can he use a knife and fork properly, without stabbing his next door neighbour or splattering everyone with mash?
• Can she open her own school bag or PE bag? Beware the drawstring bag! They can be devilishly tricky for little people!
• Can he put his own socks and shoes on? Putting on other people’s socks and shoes by mistake does not count.
• Can she dress and undress herself? New school uniform looks ever so smart but let her have lots of practice with the buttons and zips involved BEFORE the big day.
• Can he go to the toilet and wash his hands without help? Boys in particular may need a little target practice!
• Talking and Listening. Can she speak to other children nicely? Can he speak to adults confidently? Can she listen and concentrate for a short period of time?
• Does he have an interest in books and stories?
• Does she like drawing and painting?
• Can she play nicely with other children? Can he share toys/books/football/etc.?
• Does he understand the idea of standing in line or waiting for his turn?
These are the skills that will make the transition from nursery into school a painless and enjoyable experience. As long as your little person has most of them down by the start of term then everything will be fine. Now your sleepless nights can be spent wondering about other things, such as how to sneak out and purchase another identical hamster, without the little people noticing, since the school pet that you so generously offered to look after over the Christmas Holidays has chosen this precise time to kick the bucket!
To all the new intake this September, I wish you all the very best of luck - May your sandwiches not be egg , and may the dinner ladies not have hairy chins!
