The Lost Art Of Handwriting

When I was at school, back in the days before laser jet printers and iPhones and ‘new fangled’ technology, we were taught handwriting. We would sit in our ranks in the classrom, copying text from the blackboard, or from books. As the years progressed we were promoted one by one from the humble pencil, up to a Berol handwriting pen, then to the ultimate goal, a proper pen, complete with scratchy metal nib and ink cartridges what would explode at inconvenient moments. These pens were highly sought after, but at the same time, were the bane of our existence. Blotting ink that has seeped all over your best handwritten work is not fun. Nor is trying in vain to get blue or black ink out of a white school blouse.
I bought a cartridge pen the other day. A fit of nostalgia took me and I purchased a beautiful, sleek, black pen that I use now to write in my journal. My kids think I am crazy. Perhaps I am a little eccentric for keeping hold of the past, but it is a very beautiful pen.
Don’t get me wrong. They are tought handwriting at school. I remember with great fondness the day that Witchling 10 came home with her ‘pen licence’ that meant that she was allowed to work in pen at school. But never has there been a mention of cartridge pens.
Although the curriculum calls for a minimum amount of coursework to be handwritten, the majority of their homework now is done on computer. It is neat and efficient and improves IT skills that will be invaluable to them in adult life. I would never have been able to desktop publish a leaflet about Cheddar Gorge or a biography of David Tennant when I was 10!
So now we have done away with traditional ink cartridges, in favour of laser jet ink cartridges which may be a little more expensive, but are certainly easier on both my purse and their school uniform.
