A good bedtime routine is very important to your child’s sense of security and for their growth and development.  From infanthood, a solid routine at bedtime will make going to sleep a peaceful shift from a busy day of learning and doing, to a restful night.

Here are the Parent Gossip top tips for gettin a good bedtime routine set up.

  • Agree a set bedtime and stick to it.
  • Make sure that all the tidying up or organising for school the next day (according to age) is done well before the bedtime routine begins. THis will help bedtime to be a calm and stress free time for you both.
  • Give your child at least half an hour warning that bedtime is approaching. Use this time to brush teeth, shower or bath, and get into pyjamas.  If you stick to this then these activities will become second nature.
  • Once your child is all ready for bed you can enjoy some quality snuggling time. A story is a great way to share this time and for older children this is a good time for a chat about their day and the opportunity to talk about anything that is worrying or bothering them so that they can sleep peacefully.
  • If your children are afraid of monsters or the dark then build in a ‘monster check’ around bed time. Your child can accompany you aroundthe house and see for themselves that there is nothing lurking in the airing cupboard or under their bed.  For my own daughters I used to check the windows and doors for them to prove that nobody could get in to the building.

Follow these tips and stick rigidly to them as well as you can and you and your child will both benefit from a good night’s sleep - every night.
