When I grow up……….
I want to be a cat.  Or perhaps a fire engine!  It’s fascinating to listen to The Witchlings contemplating the future.  Witchling 10 has no intention of ever leaving home and is hoping to evolve into a cat.  Failing that, she will relinquish her feline ambitions in favour of becoming a multi-tasking millionaire.  Her working day will be broken down into 3 parts.
•    In the morning she will be an artist.  She loves to draw and paint and (though I say it myself) she shows some natural talent in that direction.
•    Around lunchtime she will be found in an art gallery being a curator.
•    For her afternoon job Witchling 10 will be off to the film set or the theatre to be a famous actress don’t you know!
It’s obvious that she has the usual fame and fortune stars in her eyes that almost every 10 year old harbours, except she has natural talent there too. She was selected by a final year film student out of around 400 children to star in a short movie.  She had to learn lines, work on a proper film set and take direction.  She was brilliant!  But I am resolved not to become a pushy stage door parent.  She has had dance lessons and did a bit of stage school but she didn’t enjoy the competitive nature of all the other girls and frankly is built more like an Olympic swimmer than a ballerina.
But what interests me the most is that she wants to be a curator.  She is fascinated by all things artistic and I hope she will continue in this direction.  We are off to The Lowry AGAIN this weekend so she can look around all the rooms and join in the interactive drawing activities that she loves.  I’m not the sort of parent who will make life miserable for their child by living vicariously and pushing them into exam choices or a career that they have no passion for. But I really do, deep down, have a dream that my Witchling will be a curator at the Tate Modern some day and maybe even a contributor!
