Our kids have been talking a lot about God and Jesus and Easter just recently. Witchling 10’s favourite book is, in fact, The Bible. She likes to read the stories, however unlikely they may seem, and seems to be learning a fairly balanced sense of right and wrong from it. She has a great kids version of the bible that makes things simple to understand and is pitched at the right age for her.  There are, in my opinion, some aspects of the bible that are absolute rot and I encourage her to question them where ever I can.  Thus, I hope she will be able to make her own informed decisions as she grows up, and follow her own spiritual path.

The topic of religion and Christianity in particular has raised the notion of christenings.  Witchling 12 was christened by her birth parents, not long after she was born, although we have no photographs to show her of the event.  Witchling 10 wasn’t.

Neither I nor my other fraction are what you would call conventionally religious. I am Buddhist and my other fraction is essentially Wiccan.  However, Witchling 10 is most definitely Christian. So why shouldn’t she be christened?

Our plan is to let her take responsibility for her own Christening.  This isn’t us being objectionable or being lazy. We want her to really think about why she wants to be christened and to take care over the preparations that are required, not just in terms of planning a little celebration and sending out christening invitations to family and friends, but in terms of preparing herself to commit to her faith.  This is a notion that I am actually borrowing from the Buddhist faith. When young Buddhists come of age they are encouraged to make their own preparations and to organise their own celebration as part of the rite of passage.

Personally I believe that it will be far more significant, and a whole lot more spiritual than dunking a baby in a font!
